Working Out with DOCTOR WHO: The Time Monster (3rd Doctor)

0

Tom Croom’s Doctor Who Adventures Thus Far:

Which brings me to my final iTunes viewing of the Third Doctor: The Time Monster.

England, the near future. Professor Thascales’ TOMTIT project is nearing completion… but why is a simple matter transmitter causing disruption to the flow of time? And what exactly is Kronos, the time monster itself?

Yes, the twelve year old me giggled every time someone mentioned the TOMTIT project.  Actually, I chuckled a bit right now when I typed it, too.  Tom.  Tit.  [chuckle.]

THE GOOD: Duh… The Master! I can’t get enough of Roger Delgado’s version of the ultimate baddie in the Doctor Who universe.  The man oozed evil with personality.  My man Mr. Master pretends to be a professor, travels in time to Atlantis, and (AND!) convinces that hot queen to help him out.  HELLO BOOBS

Is she, too, a part of the TOMTIT project? [more chuckling.]

The Master = pure awesome.

THE BAD: The name “TOMTIT”. [snort. giggle.]

THE CHEESE: Kronos, The allegedly epically powerful super bird like being that is (obviously) a man in white costume flapping his wings in a very silly fashion.  Check it out:

It should also be pointed out that this episode, like The Time Warrior, features some Star Wars co-mingling goodness: David Prowse aka “Darth Vader” is the Minotaur in Atlantis in this series.  The Force, though, was not strong with him since he gets killed in the maze.

Working Out with DOCTOR WHO: The Claws of Axos (3rd Doctor)

For those of you keeping track of what I’ve seen so far:

Today it is very common to watch British actors take on American roles with American accents (such as House with Hugh Laurie).  Waaaaaaay back in the seventies, though, it’s downright painful to watch.  In this series we’re introduced to a character by the name of Bill Filer.

Bill Filer is an American agent sent to look into the threat of The Master and other zany Time Lord related happenings that seem, for some reason, to be centered on England.  The actor (Paul Grist) appears to be in pain whenever he stumbles through an American accent.  He’s trying… hard.  A little too hard and it becomes distracting after a while.

From iTunes:

Earth, the near future. Axos, a living spacecraft, lands and offers Earth a new energy source – Axonite. But what is Axos’s real agenda?

THE GOOD: The Master returns!  In true super villain form, he gets captured by the Axos but then tries to cut a deal with them to help destroy Earth and (of course!) the Doctor.  He would have gotten away with it, too, if it hadn’t of been for those meddling kids.

THE BAD: Aside from the painful impersonations of United States government types (see above) this series really wasn’t all that bad.

THE CHEESE: The Axos.  How cheesy?  Check out the figure coolness you can buy now!

(Anyone who is suddenly overwhelmed to buy me one, they are online here.  My shipping address is: Green Mustard Entertainment, PO Box 644437, Vero Beach, Florida 32964.  Just putting that out there.  LOL)

Working Out with DOCTOR WHO: Terror of the Autons (3rd Doctor)

My continuing adventure of losing weight while watching seventies science fiction on an exercise bike!

“Terror of the Autons” is the first appearance of the Master AND the Doctor’s future companion Jo Grant. Who is Jo Grant?  Here she is with a Dalek:

Ah… the seventies.

THE GOOD: The Master is something the the show needed.  Every hero needs a counterbalance: Batman & The Joker; Luke Skywalker & Darth Vader; Simon & Garfunkel. You get the picture.

The Doctor’s nemesis is superbly played by an actor named Roger Delgado who conveys the character as science fiction version of the James Bond bad guy stereotype.  He has the ego, the attitude and a suave way of making you LIKE that he’s not a good person.  I was saddened to read that Mr. Delgado passed away before the finale of the third Doctor’s run and (following the Time Lord regeneration concept) appears in later series as another actor.  I can easily say that I would have liked to have seen Roger Delgado’s The Master in many more episodes.

THE BAD: A circus?  Really?  The writers chose a circus as the place to introduce the awe inspiring villain of the Doctor Who universe?!! Really???!!!!

THE CHEESE: The Autons are back… and this time they have a pissed off troll doll!  I understand the concept behind the Autons when the show was made (read: cheap special effects made easy!) but I just don’t see any fear factor in them.  They’re fun, but they truly are the cheese of these episodes.
