Chicago Trip in Review. (Here’s what we saw while we were there worth mentioning.)
0Back in August, Wasabi Anime appeared at Gen Con 2011. I took the opportunity to extend my stay there so that Shannon and I could go a couple of hours north and check out Chicago, Illinois – one of the remaining cities in the U.S. that I had never visited. With only a few days in town, we did out best to see things that we felt were the “must see” elements of the city. Here’s the highlights:
The top of the Willis (Sears) Tower. Worth it. GREAT views of the city and the lake. (Click here for all the photos.) There’s even sections near the top where you can look down along the edge of the building. A little unnerving, but epic.

A road sign that just doesn’t exist in Florida.

I suddenly feel like I’m in Gotham City. Wonder why?

We went to the Art Institute of Chicago. Totally worth it.

As a road trip addict, I found the fact that this exists right outside the museum TOTALLY EPIC.

We walked out to the end of the Navy Pier. NOT worth it. Very touristy and not enough “Chicago” to it. It did, though, have a nice view of the lake.

We visited the Field Museum. TOTALLY worth it – even if it was just to see this:

The John G. Shedd Aquarium. It was fun, but it wouldn’t have ruined the trip if we had missed it. I guess I’m spoiled living near the ocean.

BEST THING IN CHICAGO… we went here:

We ate hot dogs and drank beer:

We watched this on a perfect game day:

The most striking thing about Chicago (aside from the legend of the awesome pizza being totally true) is how clean the city was. They do a great job keeping the streets free of trash and it all had a very “theme park” feel to it. Do I need to go back to Chicago? Probably not, but I wouldn’t shirk the opportunity if it came up again.
La Moon in Miami, Florida…
4This crazy Man v. Food list is getting pretty long. LOL
- Joe’s Stone Crab in Miami, Florida
- The Old Salty Dog in Sarasota, Florida
- Hot N Juicy Crawfish in Las Vegas, Nevada
- The NASCAR Cafe in Las Vegas, Nevada
- Shula’s Steak House in Miami, Florida
- Gladys Knight And Ron Winans’ Chicken And Waffles in Atlanta, Georgia
- The Jack-N-Grill in Denver, Colorado
- The Buckhorn Exhange in Denver, Colorado
- The Vortex in Atlanta, Georgia
The weekend before last, I found myself in Miami for the evening taking care of some business related items on my to do list. Since I was in town and had some time to spare, I decided to track down another Man v. Food location in Miami: La Moon.
It’s a small place right at the edge of the city. The weather was cool, so I opted to sit outside and enjoy a beer. They had a Columbian brand I had never tried called Agila. It was light and provided the alcohol I would need for the hot dog goodness I was about to try…
The Supermoon Perro!
The Supermoon Perro is a Colombian style hot dog topped with bacon, potato strips, 5 different sauces, and a quail egg. You read that right, folks: that white thing in the photo on top of the hot dog is a quail egg.
And I ate it.
And it was good.
Overall, the hot dog was tangy and worthy of a MvF mention. The atmosphere, though, is what makes La Moon worth the stop. It has that Miami ambiance that you read about but rarely truly experience. For the prices and the value of food, odds are that I’ll swing by again in the future if only to take some friends to experience a colorful piece of South Florida.
Shannon’s Birthday…
0Just a short note to again say THANK YOU to all of you that made the hike to our place last weekend to help my wife celebrate old age.
The highlights:
- The 56 inch TV dying (power supply issue that can be fixed). *
- Buying her a 42 inch TV for her birthday at the last minute.
- Defiling said TV by watching “Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus” on it starring Deborah Gibson. (Thanks Jason.)
- Tom & Ryan’s Jello shot factory and the discovery of how to make good grape jello shots! **
- The Hale Bros. (in)famous Apple Pie.
- Magic chicken!
- Beer. Lots of beer.
- Taking the boat out on the lake… sort of.
Needless to say, we were still recovering on Monday morning.
* Mrs. Croom brought home a giant UPS (uninterruptible power supply) to replace the surge protection that the TV used to be plugged into just in case.
** Coconut rum is the secret!
