Yes… Orange Anime lives in the magical land of “Flordia”. It’s south of “Gerogia” on the east coast of the U.S.

So I held off going public with my exciting adventures with Orange Anime over the past couple of weeks because I was waiting for the situation to run its full course (and, honestly, I’ve had a severe lack of free time.)

The short short version: in as many years as it has been around, Orange Anime still succeeds in perpetuating the “stupid anime fan” stereotype – even as far as its management team.

The short version: I’ve been working with the JACON staff to come up with ways to make the final JACON an all inclusive event for Florida’s anime fandom. Along with my team at Wasabi Anime we’ve approached other anime related events and clubs in the Sunshine State trying to get them to be involved in JACON:ENDGAME.

Since JACON is an event that celebrates anime fandom, we felt that (for the final year) it would serve everyone if we put personal politics to the side and opened the door to as many clubs/conventions as possible. Anime Sushi was invited to host an event at JACON (they declined) as was Anime Festival Orlando (who accepted – and will be there!) Other discussions are in the works.

I personally suggested giving Orange Anime the opportunity to “step up” and host a couple of events at JACON. After discussing it with their staff over a couple of weeks – the key issue in making it happen seemed to be a time conflict with the annual Orange Anime pre-con breakfast and the time slot JACON would need help with an event.

I attended a JACON meeting last week (to represent Wasabi Anime) and explained the situation and asked for something pretty extreme… and JACON actually agreed.

Not only did JACON offer to have Orange Anime host events at the convention – they also offered to pay for the breakfast as an event. READ: JACON WAS GOING TO PAY TO FEED ORANGE ANIME MEMBERS.

So the next morning, I started writing an email to the two admins at Orange Anime (David & Michael). To be honest, I was pretty thrilled about the whole thing. I have never been a fan of the type of people Orange Anime attracts to its positions of “power” (mods and admins), but both of the folks I had been talking to seemed nice enough – and it was a great chance to give them a fresh start.

Before sending the email that morning, though, someone pointed me to a thread on Orange Anime I had posted discussing the JACON VIP pass offer. It seems that one of the Orange Anime STAFF decided to bitch about me and then (seperately) bitch about JACON.

(I’d post the link, but in true OA censorship form – the posts are deleted.)

Needless to say – the offer was retracted. It proved that Orange Anime is still a failure in running itself as an organization. To their credit – the staff member has since been removed from staff… but it bears the question: what was an idiot like that doing on staff in the first place?

Disappointed doesn’t even begin to describe it.

Now I know why so many people email asking if/when we could start Florida Anime again… since they are sick of the type of people that populate Orange Anime.

Looks like it’s time to put a team together of another project.

Sad anecdote…

The walls in my home office are covered with dozens of autographs collected from my twenty years of going to fan conventions and meeting celebrities here and there. Shannon and I will look at them from time to time – and joke about the fact that all of them are still alive.

Until now. :(
