The DVD (and Blu-ray) backlog of “need to watch.”

I am a firm believer of making proper use of things I purchase and own. More specifically: books, Blu-rays, DVDs and video games.

If I own (or someone gives me a gift of) a movie or TV series to watch, then I insist of watching it as least one time before putting it on “the shelf.” The same applies to books… thus there are a couple of novels sitting on the end table next to my bed that are unfinished (with apologies to Jimmy Buffett and my friend Cynthia Gralla.)

Last weekend I did some housecleaning and got an inventory of the “to watch” stack of video discs sitting near the TV. Here’s the stack waiting to be watched:

* Someone bought the Gossip Girl DVDs for my wife. I wouldn’t count on me watching those… but she will.

** I do not own Knight Rider (Season 3) yet because I refuse to pay more that $20 for a classic TV box set, thus I am patiently waiting for it to go on sale.

Speaking of TV series box sets… I wonder if Joey Snackpants has picked up his copy of Battlestar Galactica yet.

Anime is out of vogue so it’s cool to like it again.

@Empirical: I agree with anime having returned to being a “niche” fandom again… and I also think this is a good thing.

That said, I already own many of the better titles on DVD. As soon as Miyazaki titles starting coming out on Blu-ray, I’ll buy some more.

I grabbed the Blu-Ray of Heroic Age from Bestbuy due to a great sale, and it looks amazing. Since I like to watch the Jp dub, the sub-titles in HD look really sharp (weird thing to notice but it’s cool), and the artwork lines looked really sharp.

I wish more cel-shaded era shows would hurry up to blu-ray, Princess Mononoke, Jin Roh, and Metropolis would look really good in full 1080.

Then again there are some of the more recent shows that I’m waiting for, like Angel Beats and Toradora, which were made for HD.

Good, albeit costly, time to be an anime fan.

Looking back I’m now curious, what are some of the good anime you own on DVD? I have quite a collection but it runs the gamut of “excellent” to “horrible”.

Although owning Sister Princess does have it’s perks, like forcing a group of friends to watch it during an all night anime fest.

@Empirical: The DVD ranks are a little light now since I dumped all movies on DVD the second the scent of a hi-def format was in the water.

There’s a DL folder on my hard drive which is where most of it resides now.

I’d have to look again (and I might do a post regarding it) – but off the top of my head, the following titles survived the DVD culling of a couple of years ago:

-Neon Genesis Evangelion complete series (the FIRST box set they did in the U.S.)

-Sailor Moon seasons 1 and 2 (these: http://www.amazon.com/Sailor-Moon-Complete-Japanese-language/dp/B000093NPZ)

Titles I remember owning (that were sold on eBay) include Princess Tutu, Excel Saga, Ghost in the Shell, and a bunch of Miyazaki films.

The last series I committed to (but eventually gave up on) was Bleach. We quit somewhere in the early 100s.

Scattered answers… but answers nonetheless.

You got farther then me, I quit bleach around episode 80, also Eva is a great series (I have the plat thin pack).

You might want to look up Angel Beats or Shigofumi for some quick 13 episode anime goodness, you don’t want to leave on a sour note like Bleach :O.
