The Silence Before The Storm (@Dragon_Con, @AWAcon & @FLSuperCon)
Aug 20th
The beginning of August was pretty damn busy. Wasabi Anime made an amazing appearance at Gen Con in Indianapolis, Indiana. The rest of the month, though, has been (happily) convention free.
Sometimes staying at home CAN be a vacation.
Next month seems to be stacking up fairly fast. My weekends in September are starting look like this:
- Atlanta
- home
- Atlanta
- Miami
October may be limited to a weekend in Miami… November might be Las Vegas… and after that? Who knows.
In other news, the Bot-tards are still stalking my blog. Check it out here. Joey Snackpants and I are discussing the possibility of going back to BotFAIL next year in California to write a follow up for You Bent My Wookie. We’re even talking about spending the money on the insane top tier level tickets JUST to do a complete comparison and between how people are treated at the show when they are considered the “1337″ and how people are treated as general attendees (which we learned the hard way in Orlando.)
Thoughts?
Invader ZIM dancin’ like a monkey!
Jun 29th
For those of you that missed it here and here – Richard Horvitz was a guest at Florida Supercon the weekend before last. He stopped by the Wasabi Anime Otaku Insomnia Rave dance party to say hi, and I brought him on stage with a cosplayer dressed as GIR. Zaniness ensued.
I thought the little girl dressed as GIR was going to explode from excitement when she got off stage and realized who she had just danced with. Pure convention awesome.
Joey & Tom’s Excellent #Botcon Adventure – this weekend!
Jun 25th
Let’s see… three weekends ago I was in Cancun. The weekend after that: Orlando for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Last weekend? Miami for Florida Supercon. And now:
I’m back in Orlando for Botcon.
So myself, Joey Snackpants and special guest star and fellow Transformers geek Tentacle Chris will be braving the world of Transformers collectors in Orlando, Florida. Afterwards, Joey and I will be penning a review for the popular pop culture blog You Bent My Wookie.
Follow my Twitter for photos and updates all weekend as we see how Hasbro serves up an event for fans in sunny Central Florida. Look for the #Botcon hash tag READ the shocking details:
- How much money will Joey spend in toys his parents already bought him over twenty years ago?
- Will Tentacle Chris find someone else who also thought Transformers Animated was cool?
- What has Stan Bush been doing since JACON last year?
- Can the boys battle their way through the hardcore fans to meet Peter “Optimus Prime” Cullen?
STAY TUNED!
Looking (and Sounding) Like a Geek for the Miami Herald…
Jun 21st
So – there’s an article about Florida Supercon on the Miami Herald website that features a small video of the show. Yes – that is my voice doing the voice over for it and (more importantly) that really is my hat:
(Note: the video isn’t embeddable – so click here instead)
EDIT: Found it on YouTube. Enjoy!
Florida Supercon is this weekend and…
Jun 17th
I’m swamped. This weekend is going to be MAD busy with events and fun with some great guests (including my good friend Richard Horvitz who is coming to visit.)
For that reason – there may not be a post a couple of days on the blog. See you on the other side of the weekend. :)
Just finished packing…
Jun 3rd
So tomorrow – er, later today, Shannon, myself and a few friends will be hopping on a plane to fly to Cancun, Mexico for a weekend of fun, zany foreign fan conventions, and Mexican food.
I was pleasantly reminded that packing for a trip on an airplane does not involve seeing how much tech stuff you can shove in a car (which is the norm for our convention travel.) Total win.
- Passport – check
- Laptop backed up before being packed – check
- Suitcase loaded to capacity – check
- Fully charged Nintendo DS and iPod for the flight – check
Anything I’m forgetting is forgotten at this point. Let’s hope they have whatever I’m missing at the local Mexican Walmart.
Expect photos and other fun stuff over the next few days.
IN OTHER NEWS: I got some amazing news a few hours ago about another celebrity guest at Florida Supercon who is (quite literally) a legend in my book. Hopefully they will officially make an announcement sometime in the next 24 hours. Stay tuned.
Geek Convention Roundup
Jun 1st
I’m taking a trip to Cancun this week – so my blogging will be (and already is becoming) a little spotty. Here’s a quick entry, though, regarding all the geek goodness that has been going on.
- Florida Supercon is less than three weeks away. It’s is absolutely astounding to see how quickly this show has grown to the size it is in just a few short years. Just look at the guest list: http://www.supercon.tv/news/284-new-guest-additions-a-full-guest-list
- Botcon is the weekend after that (23 days away.) They still don’t have any of their events listed.
- Ancient City Con is just a couple of weeks after that in July. The team from ACC will also be coming down to South Florida to host gaming events at Florida Supercon. Very cool. Also, Rekha Sharma from Battlestar Galactica is a guest at Ancient City Con this year. Very, very cool.
- Gen Con is up after that – the first weekend in August. This will be my first time setting foot in Indianapolis, Indiana – and my first time at such a gamer-centric event. Luckily, I have Joey Snackpants as a tour guide.
- Star Wars Celebration is the weekend after that. Fun fact: I’ve already met George Lucas in person – so I’m on the fence as to whether or not to attend this event.
- Dragon*Con brings us to September… and we got our reservations for this a while ago. Zaniness (typically) ensues.
- Anime Weekend Atlanta is right after Dragon*Con, so things will be busy that month. Not sure what we’re doing for that yet – but odds are it’ll be interesting.
As for the rest of 2010… nothing in stone (yet.) There are rumors of something horror related in October. Stay tuned.
After that – InvaderCON is going full steam. I’ve been amazed at the response for this “little show that could.” This will post on the official site later this week, but we’ve already sold tickets for InvaderCON 2011 in the following locations:
- Alabama
- Georgia
- Idaho
- Illinois
- Florida
- Massachusetts
- Michigan
- Missouri
- Nebraska
- New York
- Ohio
- Nova Scotia (Canada!)
- Washington, DC
The best part? We haven’t even started any heavy advertising… yet. Thus the power of the Interwebz.
