The Silence Before The Storm (@Dragon_Con, @AWAcon & @FLSuperCon)
Aug 20th
The beginning of August was pretty damn busy. Wasabi Anime made an amazing appearance at Gen Con in Indianapolis, Indiana. The rest of the month, though, has been (happily) convention free.
Sometimes staying at home CAN be a vacation.
Next month seems to be stacking up fairly fast. My weekends in September are starting look like this:
- Atlanta
- home
- Atlanta
- Miami
October may be limited to a weekend in Miami… November might be Las Vegas… and after that? Who knows.
In other news, the Bot-tards are still stalking my blog. Check it out here. Joey Snackpants and I are discussing the possibility of going back to BotFAIL next year in California to write a follow up for You Bent My Wookie. We’re even talking about spending the money on the insane top tier level tickets JUST to do a complete comparison and between how people are treated at the show when they are considered the “1337″ and how people are treated as general attendees (which we learned the hard way in Orlando.)
Thoughts?
The Ballad of #BotCon continues…
Jul 19th
I got back from Colorado late last night, and I’ve been swamped with getting things together for about a dozen projects. Plus, I have a bunch of great photos to post and (to top it all off) the A/C is broken in the house. True story. It died while we were out of town, it seems, and it is currently 88 degrees while I’m typing this. The A/C guy will be here tomorrow.
That said, I thought the whole BotCon aka BotFAIL arguments had subsided. Joey and I wrote our review. Silly BotCon kids got their panties in bunch. Traffic to my blog spiked. Zaniness ensued. It seems, though, that the issues with the review have extended to a new faction: people upset that we piss on their beloved Transformers series: Beast Wars. Take this brainchild from Twitter:
@TomCroom You hate Beast Wars? You know, BW was somebody’s favorite childhood show, maybe somebody too young to have seen G1
@TomCroom Of course, that was too subtle. What I meant to say was “suck it”.
Cute. The Gobots was someone’s favorite show from my childhood, too – but that didn’t stop it from sucking. As anyone who has ever attended one of the DARE! panels can tell you, I am NOT a nostalgically blinded geek. I point out the good (and the bad) in much of G1 along with newer shows like Robots in Disguise and Animated.
Thus – you’re talking out of your ass. Douche.
Next up is just a whole new level of Interwebz fun. Someone referenced the whole thing in a webcomic. Seriously.
You should go read the whole thing on the author’s website. It’s chuckle-worthy, but he got the Grimlock bit wrong. We have hosted with Gregg Berger, the voice of Grimlock… BUT, Joey and I talked tonight and we’re not opposed to hosting an entire panel talking like Grimlock.
I can see it now…
“Me Tom think Beast Wars still sucks!”
“Me Snackpants hate Bayformers and want to smash!”
Also, for the record, I have blue eyes.
So why does Beast Wars suck? Great question – and one I’ll never answer on this blog. That material is reserved for DARE! The Transformers Panel Ultimate – scheduled for many quality conventions in the coming future including Gen Con, Anime Festival Orlando and (tentatively) Anime Weekend Atlanta.
So keep posting replies, arguing on forums and writing your web comics; none of that will change the fact that BotCon was a weak convention and a good trade show.
Geek Convention Roundup
Jun 1st
I’m taking a trip to Cancun this week – so my blogging will be (and already is becoming) a little spotty. Here’s a quick entry, though, regarding all the geek goodness that has been going on.
- Florida Supercon is less than three weeks away. It’s is absolutely astounding to see how quickly this show has grown to the size it is in just a few short years. Just look at the guest list: http://www.supercon.tv/news/284-new-guest-additions-a-full-guest-list
- Botcon is the weekend after that (23 days away.) They still don’t have any of their events listed.
- Ancient City Con is just a couple of weeks after that in July. The team from ACC will also be coming down to South Florida to host gaming events at Florida Supercon. Very cool. Also, Rekha Sharma from Battlestar Galactica is a guest at Ancient City Con this year. Very, very cool.
- Gen Con is up after that – the first weekend in August. This will be my first time setting foot in Indianapolis, Indiana – and my first time at such a gamer-centric event. Luckily, I have Joey Snackpants as a tour guide.
- Star Wars Celebration is the weekend after that. Fun fact: I’ve already met George Lucas in person – so I’m on the fence as to whether or not to attend this event.
- Dragon*Con brings us to September… and we got our reservations for this a while ago. Zaniness (typically) ensues.
- Anime Weekend Atlanta is right after Dragon*Con, so things will be busy that month. Not sure what we’re doing for that yet – but odds are it’ll be interesting.
As for the rest of 2010… nothing in stone (yet.) There are rumors of something horror related in October. Stay tuned.
After that – InvaderCON is going full steam. I’ve been amazed at the response for this “little show that could.” This will post on the official site later this week, but we’ve already sold tickets for InvaderCON 2011 in the following locations:
- Alabama
- Georgia
- Idaho
- Illinois
- Florida
- Massachusetts
- Michigan
- Missouri
- Nebraska
- New York
- Ohio
- Nova Scotia (Canada!)
- Washington, DC
The best part? We haven’t even started any heavy advertising… yet. Thus the power of the Interwebz.
Two weeks later…
Feb 12th
So you may have noticed that I’ve moved the blog off of Blogger and over to its own WordPress installation. That is because WordPress has finally worked in many of the features I first liked about Blogger back in 2008… so here we are.
In case you didn’t read on the old blog location, please change your RSS feed to: http://www.tomcroom.com/?feed=rss2
Now that THAT’S out of the way – things have been really, really busy with life and the newly reformed Green Mustard Entertainment, Inc. (formerly Green Mustard, LCC). I have been talking about the team at Wasabi Anime helping out with a ton of events and projects this year and next.
Yes we’re already planning for 2011.
Without giving away too much, here is how my year is starting to look:
- June 2010 – Expo Comics Cancun in Cancun, Mexico (tentatively confirmed)
- June 2010 – Florida SuperCon in Miami, Florida (as Wasabi Anime)
- June 2010 – BotCon in Orlando, Florida
- July 2010 – Ancient City Con in St. Augustine, Florida (as Wasabi Anime)
- August 2010 – Anime Festival Orlando in Orlando, Florida (as Wasabi Anime, tentatively confirmed)
- September 2010 – Dragon*Con in Atlanta, Georgia
- September 2010 – Anime Weekend Atlanta in Atlanta, Georgia (as Wasabi Anime, tentatively confirmed)
- March 2011 – Shuto Con in Lansing, Michigan (as Wasabi Anime)
- March 2011 – InvaderCON in Atlanta, Georgia (as Green Mustard Entertainment)
Throw in a couple of other side entertainment projects and consulting gigs – and you can see why I’ve been lax with my writing lately. Oh – and did I mention I have a day job?
So (again) here we are. More soon.
My Name is Tom Croom and…
Sep 22nd
it has been almost a week since my last post.
The reason (aka “excuse”) is that I’ve been swamped with writing updates for another blog style website I pen things for.
Then there was the whole driving to Atlanta last weekend for some zany convention.
Tomorrow I head to Orlando for the evening to watch a rock band from the 70′s sing that song from The Sopranos.
In short – I need to try and stay home more often and get some rest.
I’ll write some long delayed TV show reviews of recent series my wife and I finished watching and other oddities going on in the House of Croom.
Working weekend relapse…
Aug 17th
So this past weekend was spent watching thirteen episodes of Torchwood in order to catch up with Shannon. While doing so, I took the time to back up over 30 DVDs worth (over 100 gigs) of old video files. There is still a long way to go… But the desktop computer is happier.
I have also started collecting seventies cartoons for the Wasabi Anime AWA event.
This week I hope to get write ups done on Michael Vick, BSG and Torchwood.
Stay tuned.
