The BotCon Chronicles…

The story to far…
1. Around the end of last year, I got word that BotCon, the Hasbro sponsored official Transformers convention, would be coming to Orlando, Florida. My friend Joey Snackpants and I became as giddy as schoolgirls at a Twilight movie premiere.
2. We contacted the convention offering to bring a “local flavor” to the show with the copyrighted trademarked patent pending universal awesomeness of “DARE! The Transformers Panel Ultimate”… our uniquely unique Transformers fan panel that has been featured at dozens of conventions in the Florida/Georgia area.
3. After a number of “please stand by” emails – we finally heard back with “no thank you” less than six weeks before the show.
4. Since we weren’t performing at BotCon, we took up an offer from the pop culture website You Bent My Wookie to go as press and write a review of our experience.
5. Joey Snackpants drove south. I drove north. We went to BotCon. We wrote this.
6. Not happy with our less than stellar review of thier show, BotCon fans found the YBMW review AND my original post criticizing BotCon regarding #4 (above.) Arguments ensued on my blog in this post.
7. Using the power of the Interwebz, I found the source of people finding my old blog post… it seems it was born out of this thread on the All Spark forums. (subsequent digging have also tracked that the blog post has been linked in member messages to and from folks at TransformersClub.com)
So there we are. I took some time to read some of the forum posts on the All Spark forums – and I found this gem from a BotCon STAFF member:
Pete@BotCon
Registered attendees always will take priority. It is all of you who support the convention, the local hotels, the eateries and so on and thus help us continue to churn out conventions and toys.
It reminds me of a scene from The Wedding Singer…
Billy Idol
One of our first class passengers would like to sing you a song inspired by one of our coach passengers. And since we let our first class passengers do, pretty much whatever they want, here he is…
A lot of the BotCon attendees have started to freak out and take offense to my insinuation that there is an air of elitism in the BotCon ranks and that the show doesn’t really cater to the “off the street” casual Transformers non-toy collecting fans. HELLO. (See above quotes.)
People keep resorting to diversionary Internet argument styles reminiscent of LiveJournal circa 2004… that is, they are trying to hinge their “argument” off of opinions OR facts that have nothing to do with what is presented while AVOIDING the key things that were brought up. Or they just post idiotic shit like this loser so his Twitter so his five followers can read it. FAIL.
So for all of you posting in this thread on my blog and visiting lurkers from AllSpark.com and TransformersClub.com… this is for you.
FACT: In the YBMW review (and related blog posts) we are talking about BotCon 2010. A number of you keep telling me how great the other BotCon conventions have been for years and (quite bluntly) I DON’T GIVE A SHIT. I reviewed BotCon 2010… not 2009, not 2008, and none of the years previous. The more you tell me how great the other years truly were, the more you are helping justify my opinion that this year’s show was WEAK.
FACT: BotCon only provided two rooms of entertainment for attendees – a dealers room and a panels room. This is BELOW AVERAGE for a fandom convention, thus the formultion of my opinion that BotCon presents itself as more of a TRADE SHOW.
FACT: BotCon did not have tickets on sale for their event online until (approximately) May 18th – which is barely a month out from June 24th (the start of BotCon) – a mere 36 days from the show… and not ALL the tickets. General admission was only available at the door. BotCon has been doing conventions for YEARS and yet the local “mom and pop” amateur shows seem to be able to get their act together sooner than that.
FACT: Speaking of tickets online, BotCon failed to disclose ALL of their pricing information in advance. Nowhere on the site did it state that there is an additional fee of $25 for an autograph AFTER paying $50 for an early admission ticket. Hence the perception of gouging attendees for money!
FACT: Speaking of information in advance, the BotCon schedule of events wasn’t announced until less than an month from the show. (See my comment a couple of facts back about the whole “amateur shows in Florida have been doing it better for years!” comments.) BotCon isn’t San Diego Comic Con; they’re not juggling 125,000 people – thus a schedule in advance shouldn’t be this hard!
FACT: Approximately 35% of the event schedule posted by BotCon was merely “autograph sessions.” Add in the fact that they list the load in times for dealers and related non-attendee useful information and it is EASY to come to the conclusion that the schedule is PADDED to look busier that it was.
Face it folks… those of you who spend the money you do on the BotCon trade show do so for collecting toys – NOT for a convention experience. I don’t know who is to blame in the end: Hasbro, the Convention promotors, or the complacency of the fans who keep handing over their money year after year.
In the end, though, Joey said it right: BotCon was BotFAIL this year.

Its get you more of what YOU want. And that is fine. For the BotCon Registered attendee, they may argue that they get MORE than what you get at SDCC. This is a niche convention.
I was just pointing out that your post made it sound like you don’t get ALL the convention perks for $300, and you do. Now whether that is everything you would WANT, well, again, that is up to you.
There has always been far more for me personally at BotCon than at SDCC. That is probably because I am mainly in to Transformers…
about 1 month ago
I don’t know the exact number of attendees and that is never divulged. It is usually around 1,000 or so though. HOWEVER, the fact remains that seating WAS available for walk ins.
So, regardless of how many registered attendee packages were sold, walk ins had the SAME panel experience and ability to attend as registered attendees. THUS, there was far more than the “nothing” you stated to do, which is where this all started.
Now, if these were NOT the panels YOU wanted to see, then as I have always said, that is fine. You prefer other formats. But there WERE activities, just ones you didn’t like. Fair enough.

This is what I always notice:
1. Tom Croom is interested in something and wants to join in on whatever that something is.
2. Tom Croom gets turned down.
3. Tom Croom then figures, “If they aren’t for me, then I’m against them.”
4. Tom Croom does something or writes something not stellar about those that turned him down.
5. Drama Ensues. Tom Croom becomes stronger.

@Pete…
You keep tripping yourself up. Read your two statements:
“I don’t know the exact number of attendees and that is never divulged. It is usually around 1,000 or so though.”
“So, regardless of how many registered attendee packages were sold, walk ins had the SAME panel experience and ability to attend as registered attendees”
Now – look at the Dolphin Resort website: http://www.swandolphinmeetings.com/space/floorplans/m-ballrm.html
The capacity of that room is only 1100 people. If there were 1000 registered attendees who get PREFERENCE IN SEATING, then BotCon anticipated giving only 100 seats to General Admission panels – such as the (aforementioned my one of the posters) “standing room only” Peter Cullen panel. That is NOT the “same ability to attend” by any stretch of the imagination.
You are PROVING that BotCon FAILED to have an appropriate amount of entertainment for ALL attendees and CATERED SPECIFICALLY to the TOP TIER TICKET HOLDERS.
This has been one of my key points of contention and justification that BotCon is a TRADE SHOW and not a CONVENTION.
So I shall repeat: I encourage you to try harder for BotCon 2012.
Tom, it is known that NOT ALL 1,000 attendees will be in the panel. Of course they won’t. As has been pointed out many times, fans have the option of different activities throughout the day. ANYONE who has been to ANY convention would know that not EVERY SINGLE PERSON goes to ANY panel and to even begin to imply that is just plain silly.
The way you twist things to make yourself “right” and to also deflect attention from when you are proven wrong just absolutely amazes me.
You say that there was NOTHING for fans to do. I say, no there WERE panels (panels YOU never went to).
You then ask how many attendees are there. You are given an answer.
You then say that since there were a 1000 attendees there was NOT enough “planned” seating for walk ins since the room holds 1,100.
And now, since in your mind, BotCon did not “plan” for more seating that that now somehow equals “BotCon FAILED to have an appropriate amount of entertainment for ALL attendees”
THE TRUTH: Every walk in had the ability to attend EVERY SINGLE PANEL on Saturday. Not ONE of which YOU attended as “Press” mind you. So YES, there WERE activities for walk ins.
Pete,
You keep making this too easy.
“As has been pointed out many times, fans have the option of different activities throughout the day.”
The different activities being:
A.) The Dealers Room
B.) The Panels Room
There are only TWO options. The key word you keep using that is killing your argument is the word *ability*.
“Every walk in had the ability to attend EVERY SINGLE PANEL on Saturday.”
This is utterly and complete FALSE based on the information you have provided and other accounts posted on this blog & elsewhere. Follow me here….
-The room holds 1100 people.
-BotCon had approximately 1000 Registered Attendees.
-BotCon had (at least) another 1000-2000 General Admission ticket holders.
-The Peter Cullen panel was standing room only.
-Registered Attendees get preference for seating in all panels (per BotCon.)
-If a General Admission person wanted to step into that panel a little late (which I am sure happened) they discovered there was no room for them. Their other option? The Dealers Room.
Thus they do NOT have the ABILITY to attend EVERY SINGLE PANEL on Saturday.
Seriously, Pete, you have to be able to see the problem here. BotCon failed to provide enough entertainment for its attendees – more specifically, General Admission attendees.
And again I repeat: I encourage you to try harder for BotCon 2012.
Tom. Were you at ONE SINGLE PANEL?
No. you were not.
All panels were open to all General admission throughout the day. This includes Peter Cullen. I know this for a fact as I walked in during the final 10 minutes.
Next, your argument of two activities as a Dealer room and Panel room is wrong. A Dealer room is NOT an activity. The activities are IN the room. The room had SEVERAL activities. The panel room had SEVERAL panels. This, DIFFERENT activities.
This is what it boils down to. All I hear from you is “what my friends told me” or “we left after a few hours.” Tom, for Press, that does not cut it.
I encourage you to do one thing. If you are going to report on something actually “go” to the thing you are reporting on.
And with that I have got to let this go. It is very clear at this point that you will not even concede that your panel room example was completely off base. Walk ins had activities. You didn’t like them. The convention wasn’t for you. Life goes on…
about 1 month ago
Pete,
You’re still dodging the issue… and asking your friends for help on the AllSpark forums obviously isn’t helping.
(By the way, let NightViper know that I have provided documentation for the panel room capacity from the Dolphin Resort’s website AND that BotCon does have a preferential seating policy for Registered Attendees per their website… which I have also linked to previously.)
I went. I felt there was inadequate programming for a convention, but I have stated that it was appropriate programming for a “good trade show.”
I have participated in an argument that you and your fellow forum friends have brought to my blog.
AND, I have proven – using facts provided by you, the Dolphin Resort, the BotCon website and information from others posting their testimonies here that BotCon did NOT plan enough entertainment for the number of attendees at the event.
Seriously… move on. I can only repeat myself (and the facts) so many times. So once more:
I encourage you to try harder for BotCon 2012.

Pete,
Added note: Also pass along to Dissever on your forum that “DARE! The Transformers Panel Ultimate!” has never been hosted at Dragon*Con… so he/she saw someone else’s “drek.” Not ours.

Tom, I was “jokingly” asking for help from them, to “pull me” out of this conversation, because they know it is a lost cause. But you knew that already and thought it would be funny to portray it as I was asking for “help” in my responses to you. Everything I have read from you is about dodging the facts when presented with them and twisting things. If you are going to quote from other boards, then “quote.”
I assume you will twist my words again. But please, if you would like to address people on other message boards, go there and do so.
Thanks!

I’ve attended 11 straight Botcons, and there is always plenty to do. TOO MUCH to do if you enjoy all the panels offered. The only times there have been crowds are the Peter Cullen panels, and that is mostly due to stragglers standing to the side and not trying to grab the seats left here & there in the crowded room. The dealer room has new toys and not-yet-released toys on display that fans love to see (perhaps a bit too much, as photography causes a line to view) and there are art contest/custom figures on display one can find if the entire dealer room is browsed. There was a Nerf target area for the kiddos, but adult fans were playing as well. Stan Bush was there, upcoming toys were revealed in a Q&A Hasbro panel, actors from previous shows were there (even if you don’t like Beast Wars, Scott McNeil is a fun guest.) I welcome a gap between panels – it allows me time to rest or eat something. As the situation is on many message boards, the issue is a matter of opinion. If someone didn’t enjoy Botcon, then that’s the end of the story. I guess there was nothing else there you wanted to see or do, or you were tired from the wait in line that started early and wanted to leave. That’s fine & nobody can argue with that. Pete looks to be upset because you feel there was nothing else for you to do, and wants to defend Botcon because there were many panels/activities to attend and wants the public to know what they are. There are panels I don’t want to go to. They have VAs that were involved with G1, Beast Wars, A/E/C and the movie there – those are must-see for me. They has reps from the G1 comic and the new comics there. I give those a pass – I’m a Simon Furman fan. The Hasbro panels are must-sees, if only for the excitement in the room. There is even a panel to discuss Botcon itself. If you were unhappy with Botcon, I understand and am sorry. Most attendees enjoy the many panels and stay for the whole weekend. You are right that seating is limited, and we all have to plan ahead to make sure we get a good seat – I have not personally seen someone turned away from a panel under FP – the “gold pass” idea was used years ago in the late 3H years and it was a mess & created bad feelings. I guess the only fact we really need to verify is if you were turned away from a panel. It is obviously true you did not enjoy the show as much as you wanted, and the best you can do is the same as we do: write FP and let them know what you like/don’t like. They can’t accommodate everyone. I keep asking for the Con to be brought back to the Midwest, but they seem keen on being on a coast next year for the third straight year. Pete seems to value your opinion as a member of the press and wanted a chance to tell his side. I think it is clear you didn’t like what you experienced. I personally don’t want lots of changes – I preferred the “turn of the century” Botcons, when it still functioned as a smaller convention but was growing. Those are the facts.

“But please, if you would like to address people on other message boards, go there and do so.”
Nope. I know the rules here… this is a ‘censorship free’ zone, as long as you attach a name to your statements. I don’t know if I am going to afforded the same courtesy there.

This will be my last post on the matter. I’ve said all that needed saying, and it’s clear that Tom and Joey are utterly incapable of admitting any wrongdoing. Rather, they’re masturbating this thread for all that it’s worth. Can’t really fault them for that; it’s probably rare for them to receive this much attention. They have shown themselves to be rude, ignorant, dishonest, and cowardly—-and apparently out of shape too.
Suffice it to say, your horrible panel has no place at Botcon. Nor will your pathetic “review” have the least bit of impact on future convention attendance.
To the people who saw fit to defend (badly) these two misfits, I say that Botcon will do great without you too.
And now, as Grimlock once said, “Goodbye, good riddance!”

Wrong doing?! Dishonest? Ignorant? Cowardly? Out of shape?!
Dishonest?
- We never said we did anything we did not do.
- We said we waited in line.
- We said we saw Peter Cullen.
- We said we talked to Stan Bush.
- We said we went through the Dealer’s Room… multiple times.
- We said we left.
- We gave our reasons why we left.
Ignorant?
- We took it upon ourselves to be part of the entire Saturday experience, which included waiting in like for 4 hours to meet Peter Cullen.
- We researched the venue to determine size and room capacities.
- We used our previous backgrounds in theme park operations, convention organization and event planning to determine how well queues, registration, exhibitor hall setup, scheduling, pricing, pre-event communication and the overall general admission goers experience was implemented.
- We took information supplied by individuals that stated they were BotCon 2010 staff here and many other places to supplement information that was available to us.
- We cited rules and answers from the BotCon 2010 FAQ.
Cowardly?
- Why? Because I won’t go play in your sandbox. Sorry, I don’t feel the need to be surrounded by “Yes’ men. Here its an open forum, and we have heard from both ‘sides’ of the story. Though nothing you have said contradicts the facts Tom and I have presented. Though you have shown distinct faith in the BotCon brand. Be careful not to look behind the curtain.
Out of shape?!
- Yeah… you’re right on that one. I’m a fat ass. Really big… like Kevin Smith in Mallrats big.
Lastly, before I said anything negative about BotCon2010, I at least spent 8 hours there before I walked out. Using your rules, I need to eat an entire meal before I was allowed to dislike it. I give Esteban credit, he has at least sat through part of our Transformers Panel before he walked out… but I couldn’t make it to Florida SuperCon, so it was only 75% as Awesome as usual. He should be there when I tell Tom how much both the Bayformers movies suck. It makes for much better theater.
Researching the size of the room does not make you ignorant. Failing to *GO* to the panels and *SEE* the open seats while claiming a lack of room makes you ignorant.
@Donnie: You’re wrong. I can check the pH of something and “go by the numbers” to know that something is too acidic to touch… there’s no need to burn off my skin if I don’t have to.
We have a good visual estimate of attendees (2500-3000); We have a good estimated of top tier ticket holders (~1000 according to a BotCon staffer); we have the capacity of the panel room (1100 according to the hotel’s documentation); we even have, for good measure; a couple of attendee comments stating that at least one event – the Peter Cullen panel – was standing room only.
Ignorance has nothing to do with whether or not Joey and I went to a panel; it has to do with the fact that you’re failing to acknowledge THE NUMBERS.
I’ve said it almost a dozen times now… I hope the BotCon team can learn from the shortcomings of their 2010 event in time for 2012.
Thanks for reading.

I’m not writing this to insult you – just to be clear.
I think your criticism may be an exaggeration fueled by your panel rejection. It didn’t seem like a very good panel, to be fair – it comes off a tad bit negative (‘Beast Wars sucks’) and elitist (internet celebrity) – I mean no offense, but I’ve been a Transformers fan since I can remember… I like to maintain some knowledge of what’s going on ‘on-line’ … but I had never ever heard of you. Again, this isn’t meant to insult you, but the self-promotion struck me as a bit silly.
I would NEVER go to a convention that was influenced by negativity – even if it’s for the stuff I’m not outrageously fond of. So the idea of an event that would disparage the series that revived Transformers after G2 flopped… I would be shocked if an official or unofficial organization endorsed such a thing.
Tom,
you can “check the pH” all you want, but you might not be dealing with the chemical you think you are.
They have the history of several past BotCons by which to base their projections of panel attendence. To attempt to reserve panel room for 3000 people is not only incredibly optimistic of panel attendence, it’s wasteful. People were standing at the Cullen panel because they didn’t want to be rude as to interrupt to go sit down. They were waiting for closer seats for the next panel. The Hasbro panel, which is traditionally the best attended, was maybe 80% full.
That’s the thing about basing things on the numbers. Sometimes numbers lie.
I think the problem here is that you two are stuck in the 80s. If you’re picking things that interest you only, then you’re gonna pick fuck all of the fun Transformers have to offer nowadays.
Beast Wars was bad?! Jesus Christ, you would have been ripped to shreds for even espousing that opinion.
I’m glad you stick-in-the-muds didn’t stay longer and kill any more joy.
@Thomas: Thanks for the level headed reply. First, this:
“I think your criticism may be an exaggeration fueled by your panel rejection.”
Not at all! I’ve expressed early on that my annoyance with BotCon regarding our panel not appearing there had nothing to do with the panel being disapproved, but with the lateness in communication regarding the matter.
In “the real world” I have a background in professional entertainment dating as far back as 1994, and I understand that a show/performer will be turned down from time to time… just as much and they can get approved. (For example, the DARE! panel will appear at this year’s Gen Con – a 30k gaming event.)
The point is – the panel rejection didn’t influence the article due to the content being turned down, but due to the lack of organization expected from a professionally run event.
As far as never hearing of us – that’s okay. I’ve never heard of you, either… yet, here you are on my blog. Go figure.
@Donnie: You’re still not getting it. Nowhere did I or Joey ever state that there should be a panel room that could hold 3000 attendees; I stated that there should have been more than run room with choices of entertainment.
BotCon failed to provide enough *alternatives* for its attendees… and numbers don’t lie.
@Nyoway: You’ve obviously never been to one of our panels. I am actually a fan of most all Transformers series – including newer fare (Robots in Disguise) and many series that never made it to the U.S. (Headmasters.) There are specific reasons why Beast Wars sucks – and they all make sense.
Tom,
you are still twisting the facts in an attempt to prove your point. But your point is inherently flawed. Pete said that “every single con attendee” had the option to attend every panel. They did. Not a single panel was at maximum capacity. Any attendee, pre-reg or no, had the option of attending any one of them. Like I said, FP has hosted enough BotCons to know how much toom ro have for panels. You went to great lengths (Dolphin conference room specs, attendee numbers and the like) to try to disprove what any person who took the time to *go* to one of the panels could have told you.
And now that the flaw has been found in your argument, you are backpedaling to the “there should have been more stuff to do” stuff. They had panels on a plethora of topics. They had the pre-show tour. They had 2 days of customizing classes. For the one-or two-day attendees, they had the art contest entries. They had the War for Cybertron game demo area. They had a bunch of guests to meet and talk to. They had a nicely sized dealer room. They had representatives from Hasbro available in their area to talk to, ask questions of, and just shoot the breeze with about TFs. They had the “shooting range” that was actually as much fun for the adults as it was for the kids. Speaking of kids, they had the play area that, from what I could tell, the kids were having a blast with. There was a pretty cool banquet (that I am SO kicking myself for not having attended).
And moreso, it was about interacting with other fans. I’m sure you will use this as your sticking point of how FP shouldn’t try to incorporate fan interaction into their planned events, but this is part of what makes BotCon so great. Some of the best fans in all of fandom getting together and enjoying our favorite hobby all together.
If you must parrot the “trade show” talking point again, please feel free. The lion’s share of people that went in with an open mind had a good time. If you didn’t, maybe it’s not FP’s fault. Maybe it was just yours.

Thanks, Mr. Croon! I believe that a disagreement doesn”t need to be discourteous. : )
You’re completely right, you’ve never heard of me (which is a shame, because I was at the Orlando convention, too! We could’ve talked! Not to mention I’m a Floridian myself – which is (again) why I’m surprised I never heard of you guys! : ) ) and honestly, I first discovered your complaints via the webcomic http://www.shortpacked.com where your point of view was essentially made the subject of mockery. I think that might’ve been a bit excessive on the author’s part, but at least it informed many, many people (Shortpacked has a very big Transformers/Web-Comics/Misc fanbase) of your plight. I think that will help with awareness of what is and isn’t available at conventions.
I’m glad to know though that you didn’t let the dismissal of your panel influence your opinion. Most people would, but I’m glad you took the mature route. Though, I’m sure you can understand though how people would draw a correlation between X rejecting Y, and Y being bitter towards X, then expressing it via whatever method they possessed, in this case, your personal blog.
As I said, there’s something in everything we’re not happy with. Beast Wars, RID, Energon, Cybertron, the live-action films, Animated etc. but I don’t think a convention meant to celebrate the property should also cover our particular hatreds of the property. That’s not an absense of fairness, it’s just good sense.

Tom, something just hit me from checking out Joey’s blog. So I will pose the same question to you…
Joey, I feel like you have been left out, so allow me to make one post to try and help you with the facts. I will post the same on Tom’s Blog
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE answer me this. PLEASE! Does SDCC have panel rooms that can accommodate EVERY SINGLE ATTENDEE at SDCC?
A simple YES or NO.
And when you answer that you will realize and hopefully finally admit a con does NOT need to have a panel room that can seat EVERY SINGLE ATTENDEE because EVERY SINGLE ATTENDEE does not go to each panel. How does BotCon know this? Because of PRIOR experience and knowing approx. how many registered Attendees will be there and how many walk ins will be there.
Again, YES or NO.
AND THIS IS WHAT I AM REFERENCING:
You said a week ago:
“The capacity of that room is only 1100 people. If there were 1000 registered attendees who get PREFERENCE IN SEATING, then BotCon anticipated giving only 100 seats to General Admission panels – such as the (aforementioned my one of the posters) “standing room only” Peter Cullen panel. That is NOT the “same ability to attend” by any stretch of the imagination.”
NOW you say
“@Donnie: You’re still not getting it. Nowhere did I or Joey ever state that there should be a panel room that could hold 3000 attendees; I stated that there should have been more than run room with choices of entertainment.
BotCon failed to provide enough *alternatives* for its attendees… and numbers don’t lie.”
Correct, you did not say it should hold all 3,000 attendees. But you DID say that BotCon only allowed 100 seats for General admission because you actually want people to believe that at a convention, EVERY SINGLE ATTENDEE goes to EVERY SINGLE PANEL.
And there have been NUMEROUS posts from attendees who were at the Peter Cullen panel and all have said there was seating.
So, REGARDLESS of your opinion of whether or not there should have been MORE panels, please answer, based on the reports and the facts, Yes or No, did BotCon have enough seating for anyone who wanted to attend a panel?

BTW, the emphasis on the “Pleases” was so you would focus on that one question and not bring up some other thing that has nothing to do with that question
