Man of Steel was, at best, underwhelming. I could dissect everything wrong with the film, but that would derail this whole post. The most basic way to convey the sins of MoS is by pointing out what it isn’t.
It isn’t Captain America: The First Avenger.
And Captain America is more of a Superman movie than Man of Steel.
Superman is supposed to be bright colors and a positive message. He is, to the point of a character flaw, the last boy scout. Man of Steel was like listening to Taylor Swift in the style of grunge music. It just doesn’t work on any level.
Truth. Justice. The America way.
So Warner Bros. is taking the guy who made the dark and dreary Superman movie (which was received with moderate reviews) and let him take on what was possibly one of the greatest moments in DC Comics history? The humbling of Superman at the hands of Batman.
“The Dark Knight Returns” is one of the key graphic novels in all of comic book history. I’m no die hard comic fan, and even I read that one.
So if you’re reading this, DC Comics, here are a couple of ways to try and fix your failing film “franchise”.
CHANGE THE NAME
Names with “v.” in the title only work for giant monsters in rubber suits. They do NOT work on movies with like actors. (See Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever for reference.)
Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice is a shitty title. The movie isn’t about Superman. The Dark Knight Returns wasn’t about Superman. It’s about Batman – with Superman and others as supporting characters. Try this on for size:
- Man of Steel (DC Universe Movie 1)
- The Dark Knight Returns (DC Universe Movie 2)
- Suicide Squad (DC Universe Movie 3)
- Wonder Woman (DC Universe Movie 4)
- The Justice League (DC Universe Movie 5)
See? Shift the BvS movie into a Superman movie. It’s okay to have other characters show up in another superhero’s movie! (Just ask Marvel.)
LIGHTEN UP THE COLOR
Seriously. Spend some money on post production and just lighten it up a bit. Make folks feel good about Superman. Folks on the Internet have already pointed this out:
INCORPORATE YOUR TV UNIVERSE
DC Television is (for the most part) pretty solid and right on point regarding what people like about comics: stories and characters. Arrow, The Flash, and even DC’s Legends of Tomorrow are all FUN. Even Supergirl.
So why not make use of them by crossing them all over and creating a whole universe?
REMEMBER THIS IMPORTANT FACT
Yes, Zack Snyder did an amazing job with 300. However, he also made Sucker Punch.
