Shannon loves Zoolander. LOVES IT. I think it’s okay, but it’s never been super impactful as a comedy for me. I, mean, I laughed… but LAUGHED.
The gas station scene.
Flash forward to now. Zoolander 2 and Deadpool both came out this weekend. I don’t often see two movies in weekend lately, but I REALLY wanted to see Deadpool, and Shannon REALLY wanted to see Zoolander 2. Here’s the result.
Deadpool was exactly what it was supposed to be. NOT a kids movie. NOT a standard superhero movie. Vulgar. Offensive. Lots of blood AND boobs. It’s the sort of movie you honestly don’t want a sequel to happen for before you feel like the filmmakers effectively captured lightning in a bottle. I don’t see them topping themselves without wearing out the originality of the first one.
Also: best Stan Lee cameo EVER.
This movie was “meh” at best. The first one was a successful film because it a solid parody of the fashion industry. It had something as the anchor to the satire and the story. The second one poked fun at the fashion industry – but it wasn’t about the fashion industry. The best parallel I could think of was Cars. Cars was about racing and road trips. Cars two had some racing, but it was a spy film. It just didn’t have the core/spirit and focus of the first film.
Same applied to Zoolander 2.
It was a little disappointing because part of me really wanted it to be good.
