One of the upsides of being sick (if there can honestly be such a thing) is that, when forced to stay home, you can get caught up on movies, TV, and video games. During my self-imposed exile to the indoors due the HORRIBLE cold I caught last week, I took time to pick and and continue playing Transformers Devastation over the weekend on my PlayStation 4.
Now, let’s not kid ourselves. Transformers Devastation isn’t a “spectacular” game by any stretch of the imagination. It’s a very pretty button masher. BUT – it is also one of the best presentations of the Transformers franchise I have seen in ages. The look and actions of the characters are on par with the cheesy amazingness of the 1984 television series. It’s downright glorious.
Unlike Michael Bay’s “Murderous” Prime, Optimus Prime is willing to sacrifice anything to protect all life on the planet. Megatron, just like in the cartoon, has no fucks to give in regards to this – and the basis of the entire video game is a half baked plan to turn Earth into Cybertron the instantly invokes the feel of the old Saturday morning cartoon.
Honest to God, I had a regular urge to eat a bowl of sugary cereal while playing this game.
The game wrapped up with a bunch of teaser material for continuing the storyline. Part of me just wishes they’d continue the story as downloadable content. I’d be fine with a new episode from time to time – if only to recapture the couch time of my childhood again.
It is worth playing? If you’re a G1 Transformers fan, it’s a MUST play.
