CURRENT MUSIC: “Step Out” by Jose Gonzalez from the soundtrack to The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
Getting ahead of some things almost alway means getting behind on others. Striking that exact chord of balance between life and work life has always been a struggle for me since, well, forever. It’s even more complicated since I don’t work FOR someone – and since, you know, I’m older.
Do I have work that needs getting done today? You betcha. It is “work that is on fire?” Not entirely. I only have one meeting hard scheduled today, so the rest of today is a batch of emails that need verbose responses. (27 to be exact.)
All of this was made more complicated by the trip home from Orlando yesterday and has bled over into the morning. I was at the Orlando Toy & Comic Con doing promotions work with a production assistant from Florida Anime Experience. It was a solid day: local meetings, storage unit drop off, sponsorship info dispersement, and more.
Shannon was a EPCOT with her sister and I had a contingency plan to swing by and meet them for a couple of hours after work was done, but by the time that happened (around 4:30 PM) we were all exhausted and opted to hear home. From where I was, the drive was about an hour and forty-five minutes-ish – usually less.
By the time I got to our exit, the ONE ROAD from the Florida Turnpike (there is only one, folks) was closed about ten miles in due to a massive car wreck. No “bypass lane” on the other side. Nothing. Just turn around, get on the Turnpike, go down to the next exit, and then get off, and head north via I-95 or US 1. These things happen – so it was only slightly annoying.
Then we got on the Turnpike.
Then we found the next wreck. The Turnpike was backed up forever and (for those that don’t know) there aren’t dozens of exits to just “hop off” and find a work around. You’re stuck.
FINALLY we got home. It only too us three hours and forty-five minutes.
BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE. For some mysterious reason, there were power outages all over the town and barrier island where we live. So, of course, we came to no power and a panicked Karma the Dog who had been stuck in the dark since at least 7:00 PM.
I adapted our place to operate pretty well. I went to Publix and grabbed dinner (chicken tenders). At our place, I took a lamp and plugged it into the still alive UPS power backup. It was still chugging away since I had powered down all the computer equipment before leaving town. Then, I pulled up a movie I had saved on my laptop and we all relaxed and ate dinner until the power returned after 9:00 PM.
It’s NOT OVER YET! This morning a boil water notice went into effect. That means that my local espresso shop can’t make the strong stuff since their water is tied directly into their brewing hardware. I’m drinking watered down coffee I write this.
So here I am. Bitching blogging about to get by for the day. My current catch up count?
-8 gym hours (including today) and – 7 blog posts.
It’s okay, though, because it’s not impossible – just a pain in the ass.
