My name is Tom Croom. Since 2001, I have been a figure in popular fan convention circles across North America. Since then, the small business I founded has become a successful pop culture entertainment company. I have been a paid consultant for some of the largest events in North America including Anime Expo in Los Angeles (www.anime-expo.org) and Gen Con in Indianapolis (www.gencon.com). I have worked hard to create a successful brand of events with my own team, and they have been well received worldwide in Atlanta, Austin, Orlando, Jacksonville, Los Angeles, and even Tokyo. This has been done by aligning myself with like-minded people and businesses looking to make a positive impact in cities and communities.
In 2013, my team and I launched a small local project called Florida Comics Experience. The event hit capacity at our initial venue, the Crowne Plaza Melbourne Oceanfront, and have since moved to the 16,000 square feet at the Eau Gallie Civic Center in the Arts District. Shortly after the first FCE event, “Space Coast Nerd Fest” took place. The event promoted a number of guests who had already appeared in Melbourne at our own show, but – by all accounts – the event was moderately successful.
Brian (I don’t remember his last name) – the owner of SCNF – and I have interacted before. He’s made harsh and misleading remarks about my convention (via his own convention) online in the past which he has promptly deleted when called out on it. Sometimes two personalities don’t mix… but that’s all a part of business.
I find it EXTREMELY unprofessional, though, when business owners and promoters use their entities (and not themselves) to slam individuals in their field. Last night we launched the new website for Florida Comics Experience: YEAR THREE (www.Florida-Comics.com) and flyer/poster distribution kicked off in tandem in the Space Coast area. Apparently, this didn’t sit well with Brian since he opted to use his Space Coast Nerd Fest Facebook to slam me and – by proxy – my brand. As stated before, I have succeeded with my ventures by working with amazing people and businesses that look to have a positive impact by working together. These actions speak loud and clearly that, in my opinion, Brian and Space Coast Nerd Fest are not of that caliber.
I felt you should be aware of the actions of a business you are listed as a sponsor of since I wouldn’t want MY brand represented that way.
