After I appear at a bunch of fan conventions (usually over the summer) I tend to get a small flood of Facebook friend requests. It’s seriously flattering that there’s so many people out there who, after I connect with them on person, want to keep up with me online. It’s humbling and – at the same time – insanely ego boosting.
So thank you.
That said, Facebook is the ONE social network I keep restrictions on in regards to adding people. Why, you ask? Simple:
Your mom is on Facebook.
What does that have to do with anything?
Well, my mom is on Facebook, too.
My mom, my aunts, my cousins… my close friends and family. Folks I grew up with and interact with regularly are the ones I keep on Facebook because (quite frankly) I sometimes post things of a personal nature. Now, 90% of the time I’m pretty open about everything – but sometimes I just want feedback from folks outside of casual acquaintances.
Now, I allegedly have a pretty big ego. I just can’t, though, bring myself to create a “Tom Croom Fan Page” on Facebook. That’s just not going to happen. I’m nothing more than very visible nerd with a haphazard lifestyle who is, in my opinion, no better than any of you reading this. I’m no celebristar and I’m more infamous than famous (thank you, El Guapo).
Like I mentioned earlier, MOST of my posts are public. Thus you can follow and reply to them by subscribing to my posts. It’s this snazzy little button to the right of the Add Friend button. See?
EDIT: It seems I can add a “follow me” button. Here it is:
The only posts you won’t see are the ones I’ve occasionally restricted to Friends Only for some reason or another. Let’s face it, though: those posts are probably boring and not about the important stuff like conventions, food, and my dog Karma.
So please, don’t take it personally if I don’t have you as a Friend on Facebook. In the immortal
lies words of all my ex-girlfriends, “it’s not you – it’s me.”
If you use anything other than Facebook – find me! I’m pretty much on every other social network out there. (NOTE: No, I don’t keep up on MySpace. Sorry Justin.)
Here, in order, are the best places to keep up with my nonsense:
1. Twitter: I’m @TomCroom on Twitter and it is my social network of choice. I post on this network more than Facebook because it’s 100% public and it allows me to connect with fellow fans while keeping up on news and stuff.
2. Instagram: I love Instagram. It allows me to take photos of random moments and share them with the world. I post everything from how awesome sunsets are in Florida to hanging out with my (strange) celebrity friends. You can follow me at instagram.com/tomcroom
3. Tumblr: You can find me at tomcroom.tumblr.com. I only log in occasionally, but it takes and posts my photos from Instagram, random updates I make from my phone, and it clones my blog posts from here.
4. Google Plus: I’m one of the ten people who actually looks at Google Plus from time to time. My updates from my phone are generally cross posted to my various social networks – and this is one of the ones I actually reply to. You can find me at plus.google.com/+TomCroom
Want more? You can also find me on these networks…
So there you have it. Thanks for understanding my mild need for occasional privacy and stuff. I love my oddball life and I’m damned lucky to get to meet (and keep in touch with) so many amazing people on this planet.
